Ad-Aware 2007 - I have been a huge fan of Ad-Aware for years but I am not so impressed with the new 2007 version which recently came out. Whereas the older version was very stable and very fast, the 2007 version is rather slow and the connection to the Lavasoft servers seems to disconnect rather easily. I am hoping though that these are minor teething problems that will soon be resolved because I am still in shock by the Spybot Search & Destroy program which really did search and destroy my system. In fact, Spybot nuked the Windows OS by removing the wrong registry files!

Ad-Aware is updated daily by Lavasoft and you can run it to check your system for spyw

Vista is riddled with an extremely large amount of "security" measures that may, or may not, be helpful. Running Vista as an Administrator may help, but did you know there is an even higher Administrator? Well, there is! All you need to do to unlock it is the follow

Voila! This is a really useful little tool for me because I often need to play with several different types of files and find the best place to do that is on the Desktop. When I'm done using those files I either delete them or toss them into their relevant folders for safe keeping. 'Send To' now allows me to send all my screenshots in a batch into the Screenshots folder. This is also handy if you have any folders that take specific actions when items are added to t

SpeedCrunch also supports smart correction and automatic completion so you can type and evaluate your mathematical expression quickly and accurately. In the event that you typed the wrong expression, there is the syntax highlighting that highlights the error and prompts you to make the correct

Once you have your SSH server configured so that you can connect to it from any Internet connection, you'll of course need a client to connect to it. Linux and OS X both have SSH clients built-in. If you're on Windows, the client of choice is PuTTY . I will provide instructions on tunneling with PuTTY, but you can certainly use other clients as w

AVG Anti-Virus - A lot of people, when looking for a virus checker, instantly gravitate to the paid Norton Anti-Virus and I don't understand why they do that when there is a free virus checker called AVG which is, in my opinion, the best virus checker available today. Grisoft, the company that makes AVG, offers a free version and a paid version but I think the free version does a good enough job on its own.

During the four years that I have been using AVG, I have never contracted a single virus as AVG stops them and quarantines them instantly the moment they try to enter the system. The program updates itself daily and you can schedule regular system checks as well. Or if you prefer, you can right-just click the next article on a file and scan it with AVG before opening the file (AVG integrates itself into the Windows Explorer me

Chances are, your PC contains entirely too much personal information about you ... passwords, banking information, credit card numbers, address books, social security number, personal emails, and maybe even a few things that you wouldn't want announced on the evening n

One of the most ridiculous features of Vista are the continuous "confirmation" messages. Messages that pop up nearly every time you attempt to run any unknown application. Almost all of which are completely unnecessary, and waste time. Here is how you can disable these annoying uac notifications, quickly and eas

This one is free for both personal and commercial use and works with Windows NT, 2000, XP, 2003 Server and Vista. You can choose between 5 different shredding algorithms, each one gradually stronger than the previous one. It also has the capability of wiping unused disk sp

But then a serious virus infection almost destroyed the hard drive and I realised I was being stupid and things had to be tightened up. Ever since then, I have been paranoid about keeping the computer clean from viruses and making sure everything is tidy, organised and fast. Now today I make sure the following programs are updated daily and are used at least every second day. Knocking on wood, I haven't had a computer virus in four years or a spyware infection in two years. I am also a speed-freak, tweaking everything to make things go fas

So in the example I'm going to provide, we will say the home network has two computers. One is a Linux box running the SSH server and the other is a Windows box with Remote Desktop enabled. We want to set up two tunnels: a dynamic tunnel and a local tunnel to connect to the Windows machine via Remote desk

The best choice is to use Firefox, because Firefox allows you to configure the browser to also send DNS requests through the proxy. If you use Internet Explorer, your DNS requests are still made via the local network you connect from and thus can still be monitored. So Firefox would be the preferred browser if you wish to maintain privacy on the network you are connecting f
